India’s banking category in 2024 was a celebrity arms race. The top four banks controlled 94% of the urban banking conversation with marketing budgets running into hundreds of crores. Ujjivan walked in with Rs. 9.35 crore, no TV presence, and less than 5% brand awareness. Outspending the competition was never an option.

Insight

When you can’t buy attention, you have to earn it. People don’t remember bank ads, they remember things that feel like them. Ujjivan’s real asset wasn’t its budget, it was its people. 12,000 employees who believed in what the bank stood for. If we could turn them into the campaign, we wouldn’t need a single celebrity.

The “Easy Easy” campaign became India’s first banking movement built entirely on employee-generated and user-generated content. Website traffic rose by 9x. Brand awareness grew 40%. Ad recall jumped 30.7%. Consideration rose 14.5%. Ujjivan went from 9.6% to 14% share of voice. And for every rupee Ujjivan spent, competitors had to spend Rs. 21 to match the same marketing impact.

A Rs. 9.35 crore campaign did what Rs. 500 crores couldn’t — it made people feel something.
